Discover the Exotic Soursop

The soursop may look frighteningly spiky on the outside, but, on the inside, it is an incredibly delicious and creamy pulp. Growing up to 10 lbs in size, it’s cultivated in Central and South America, Asia, and Africa.

Soursop, also known as guanabana, puree tastes like a naturally sweet blend of lychee, pineapple, apple, and a slight hint of banana. Its fragrance is strong, slightly pungent, and works especially well in milky stouts.

What flavor profile does soursop bring to a brew?

Soursop delivers a tropical, creamy-sweet flavor often compared to a blend of strawberry, pineapple, and banana. This distinct profile makes it well suited for sours, farmhouse ales, and fruited beverages where brewers want a tropical character that stands apart from more common fruit additions like mango or passion fruit. Fierce Fruit's soursop puree preserves this flavor using real, sun-ripened fruit.

Is soursop puree the same as guanabana puree?

Yes, soursop and guanabana refer to the same fruit, with guanabana being the common name used across Latin America. Some suppliers label products under one term or the other, so brewers sourcing this puree should know both names describe the identical fruit. Fierce Fruit lists it as soursop puree to align with common US industry terminology.

How is soursop puree different from soursop extract and flavoring?

Soursop puree is made from 100% real fruit, while extracts and flavorings rely on concentrated or artificial compounds to mimic the taste. Puree retains the fruit's natural texture, pulp, and complexity, giving brewers a more authentic result in the final product. Extracts may offer convenience, but lack the depth and consistency that real fruit puree provides.

What beverages pair well with soursop puree beyond beer?

Soursop puree works well in fruit ciders, seltzers, and cocktail mixers, thanks to its tropical sweetness and smooth texture. It's also a strong candidate for THC-infused drinks and other craft beverages looking for a unique tropical note. Brewers experimenting outside traditional beer styles often find soursop pairs nicely with citrus or berry purees for added complexity.

Does soursop puree contain seeds or fibrous material?

No, Fierce Fruit's soursop puree is processed to remove seeds and excess fiber, leaving a smooth, ready-to-use puree. This makes it easier to incorporate into brewing equipment without clogging lines or requiring additional straining. The result is a consistent, workable product for commercial-scale batches.

How does soursop puree compare to other tropical purees like mango or passion fruit?

Soursop offers a creamier, more complex flavor compared to the brighter acidity of mango or passion fruit puree. While all three fall under the tropical fruit puree category, soursop's flavor is often described as a blend of multiple fruits, making it a distinct choice for brewers wanting something less common on tap lists.

Is soursop puree suitable for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic craft beverages?

Yes, this puree works across both categories, from fruited sours and ciders to non-alcoholic seltzers and mixers. Its tropical flavor profile translates well whether it's fermented as part of a beer or cider, or added post-fermentation to a finished beverage for flavor and aroma.
